Signal Words
For hazard alerting signs, the signal word is selected according to the risk presented by the hazardous situation that the safety sign addresses. That is, signal word selection is based on the risk posed if the safety sign is not followed. The risk is determined based on:
a. worst credible severity if an accident occurs;
b. probability of an accident if the hazardous situation occurs (i.e., if the safety sign is not followed);
c. probability of the worst credible severity occurring.

Some years ago, a fellow called Damon Burke built this generator, and got it hosted on his personal site at the ERAU Observatory. When he left working for ERAU, the generator stayed online for several years, until a website rebuild destroyed it in early 2025.
This made humble internet nerds such as myself, who have amused ourselves with the sign generator for some years, to cry out in anguish!
Fortunately, I was able to track down the author through web archives and a bit of sleuthing. And in the best news, Damon agreed to pass on the source code and open source it.
I'm still working on getting the code source available right now, but I'm releasing it under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
